How to Make Salt Dough Ornaments

By Dianna Towns Dec 9, 2021 | 1:28 PM

The best ornaments on the tree are the ones that are handmade. We tried our hand at Salt Dough Ornaments (see what we did there?) made out of ingredients you’re guaranteed to have in your kitchen. This project is easy, not messy (seriously!), and will keep your kids occupied!

What You Need

  • A large bowl & spatula
  • Ribbon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water

Directions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 250 degrees
  2. Start by mixing your flour and salt in a large bowl
  3. Slowly add the water a tablespoon at a time
  4. Knead the dough until it’s soft and pliable. Let sit for 20 minutes (we used this time as a snack and play break 🙂 )
  5. Flatten the dough and make your shapes. We made handprints, but you can do any shape you want.
  6. Poke a hole where you’d like the top of the ornament to be
  7. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 2 hours
  8. Let cool completely.

String your ribbon through the hole and you have an ornament!

Tip: You can color your dough by adding food coloring with step 2. You can also paint your ornament after it’s baked & cooled!
